29.01. Lecture by Prof. Dr. Heiner Flassbeck
Lecture and subsequent discussion with Prof. Dr. Heiner Flassbeck
We cordially invite all interested parties to the lecture "Europe at the crossroads" by Prof. Dr. Heiner Flassbeck. The event will take place on January 29, 2026 at 6 pm in lecture hall US-C 114, on the Lower Castle Campus of the University of Siegen. Prof. Flassbeck will compare economic developments in the USA and Europe and explain why Europe has fallen so far behind. He argues that the European focus on competitiveness, which has dominated European politics since the beginning of the century, is subject to a fundamental misjudgment. Europe has reached an economic dead end due to its intellectual restriction to neoliberal solutions.
According to Flassbeck, Germany is about to repeat the mistake of Agenda 2010 because the political leadership once again fails to understand that in the European Monetary Union and in the face of American resistance to traditional mercantilism, only the state can stimulate the economy with a massive stimulation of demand.
The presentation is an excellent opportunity to look at the complex interactions between debt and savings in an open economy. The presentation will be followed by a discussion in which participants can contribute their questions and perspectives.
