In Focus: Water

At the 19th Bonn Academic Summer, Friederike Welter discussed the consequences of increasing water scarcity in Germany with experts. The focus was on innovative approaches to sustainable water management, as well as the challenges facing politics, business, and society.

"Water scarcity in Germany is not primarily a problem of quantity, but rather—in light of increasing climate change—a problem of management, distribution, and governance," explained Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Friederike Welter in early July at the 19th Bonn Academic Summer. Together with Dr. Christine Wilcken (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety), Dr. Alex Klusen (Deka Investment GmbH), and Uwe Ritzer (Süddeutsche Zeitung), she discussed the risks and conflicts over water use that are likely to arise if water becomes scarce in Germany.

As part of the 2025 report by the Expert Commission on Research and Development, the Siegen-based professor had focused in particular on promising innovations in water management.

The Bonn Academic Summer is organized each year by the Sparkassen Finanzgruppe Foundation for Science. Its goal is to bring together specialists, executives, students, and researchers to collaboratively explore current challenges.
