The European literary field

Cultural brokers and boundary practices

Project description

The second phase of the EuroLit Project is dedicated to the question of how the boundaries between national, European, and global book markets are negotiated. We investigate the practices by which publishing houses, translators, and other literary professionals promote, inhibit, and steer the exchange of book translations across linguistic and cultural boundaries. We leverage a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative methods (participant observation and interviews) and quantitative data analyses to generate comprehensive insights into the boundary work practices of these literary brokers. Thereby, the project makes significant contributions to current research on the social dynamics of intercultural exchange.
