Building on a 10-semester degree course in elementary school teaching with integrated special needs education
(6 semesters Bachelor's and 4 semesters Master's), in which a proportion of courses with content related to the areas of special needs "Emotional and Social Development" and "Learning" are studied, the subsequent 2-semester Master's "Teaching Qualification for Special Needs Education" enables students to additionally acquire a teaching qualification for special needs education with the areas of special needs "Learning" and "Emotional and Social Development". An important goal of this degree course is the intensive preparation of prospective teachers for dealing with pupils with behavioral problems and learning disabilities in inclusive learning groups and at special schools.

Building on a 10-semester degree course "Teaching Qualification for Primary Schools with Integrated Special Needs Education" (6 semesters Bachelor's and 4 semesters Master's), in which students already study a proportion of courses with content related to the special needs areas "Emotional and Social Development" and "Learning", the subsequent 2-semester Master's "Teaching Qualification for Special Needs Education" enables students to additionally acquire a teaching qualification for special needs education with the special needs areas "Learning" and "Emotional and Social Development". An important goal of this degree course is the intensive preparation of prospective teachers for dealing with pupils with behavioral problems and learning disabilities in inclusive learning groups and at special schools.
The special curricular feature of this degree course is the combination of previously separate perspectives on inclusion - general/school education and special education - and opens up attractive opportunities on the teaching job market.
Step 1: Bachelor's and Master's degrees for elementary school teaching with integrated special needs education

- Educational sciences with integrated special needs education
- German for migrant pupils (DSSZ)
- Learning area I: Basic language skills
- Learning area II: Basic mathematical education

2nd step (optional): Master's degree for the teaching profession for special educational needs (with a focus on "Learning" and "Emotional and social development")
The 2-semester Master's degree builds on course content with a special educational needs profile from the previous Ba and Ma degree course, so that further coursework and examinations in the two special educational needs areas must be completed for the teaching degree in special educational needs.
- Learning" specialization
- "Emotional and social development" specialization (both specializations to the same extent)
What happens after studying educational science with integrated special needs education?
After studying Educational Sciences with Integrated Special Needs Education up to the first Master's degree and passing the associated examinations (usually after 10 semesters), you will receive a teaching qualification for primary school or secondary school teaching with a special needs education profile. After an optional subsequent traineeship at a center with a teaching degree for primary or secondary schools (G/HRSGe), you can apply for advertised positions for primary or secondary school teachers. This special educational profile makes you attractive for the job market, as there will be more and more inclusive schools in the future.
With the subsequent two-semester course of the "Second Master's degree course in special needs education with a focus on learning and emotional and social development", you will also obtain the teaching qualification for special needs education with a focus on learning and emotional and social development. You then have the choice of which area you complete your preparatory service in: You can apply for the preparatory service at a Center for Practical Teacher Training (ZfsL) for special educational support or at a ZfsL for the teaching profession at elementary school or for the teaching profession at Hauptschulen, Realschulen, secondary schools and comprehensive schools.
Regardless of which preparatory service you choose, after completing your training you can apply for positions at elementary school or Hauptschulen, Realschulen, Sekundarschulen and Gesamtschulen as well as for positions for special needs teachers. (Note for positions for special needs teachers: These positions can be advertised at inclusive schools and special schools at primary and secondary level. With the double qualification, you can therefore work at primary and secondary schools (regardless of whether you have studied to become a primary or secondary school teacher), at general schools or special schools as a special needs teacher).

Based on the decree of the Ministry of Schools and Further Education of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia "Recruitment of graduates from universities of applied sciences at vocational colleges" of 23.12.2016, the University of Siegen offers a new study model (Model C) for the Master's degree program in addition to the existing undergraduate models of teacher training for vocational colleges (Model A and B) with the subjects Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology. Building on the completion of a pure Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, the Master's degree in Model C teaches subject-specific didactic and educational science content. The aim of the Master's program is to obtain a Master of Education degree for the teaching profession at vocational colleges. There are several subject combinations to choose from for the Master's degree course. In addition to a non-dual course of study, graduates with a Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences have the option of combining the Master's course with work at a vocational college ("dual variant"). You can find more information on the general conditions for employment in the teaching profession in the corresponding decree
of the Ministry.

From the winter semester 2021/2022, it will be possible for the first time to study the extended degree course in Economics for the teaching profession at Haupt- Real-, Sekundar- und Gesamtschulen (HRSGe) and the teaching profession at Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen (GymGe) at the University of Siegen.
Students on the extension course in economics acquire in-depth subject-specific and didactic skills in the field of economic education and the ability to apply these skills in a school-specific manner. The content focuses on areas such as the social market economy, economic policy, sustainability, consumer education, economic research methods and practical implementation in the classroom.
Students and already qualified teachers alike are thus given the opportunity to acquire an additional, third teaching qualification in economics in conjunction with an undergraduate teaching degree. This improves future entry opportunities for prospective teachers and offers trained teachers an additional qualification in the field of economic education.
