Well-prepared for your travels abroad

Remember to re-enrol or apply for a semester on leave in due time!
Make sure you have adequate insurance coverage and medical care while abroad!
Follow the travel and safety advise of the Federal Foreign Office for your country(ies) of destination.

Re-enrolment or semester on leave?

If you spend time abroad during your studies—for example, for exchange studies or an internship abroad - you must remain enrolled at the University of Siegen for the entire duration of your stay!

You can choose to either re-enroll as usual and pay the semester fee, or apply for a semester on leave. If you have any questions or issues, the International Student Secretariat at the University of Siegen can assist you.

During a semester on leave, you are not permitted to take any exams at the University of Siegen! This includes written exams, term papers, and theses.
If you study abroad during a semester on leave, the credits you earn there will not be recognized at the University of Siegen before the start of the following semester!

Insurances and Health Care

International health insurance

Your European Health Insurance Card (back of your German health insurance card) is valid within the EU. However, the coverage may be insufficient, especially if medical evacuation or specialized medical procedures are required.

Additional private international health and travel health insuracne incl. repatriation may be a good idea and is recommended if you are traveling outside of Europe.

If you receive PROMOS or Erasmus+ funding, you qualify for an insurance plan provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Liability and Accident Insurance

Your current insurance policies most likely only apply within Germany. For your stay abroad, it is advisable to obtain appropriate international insurance coverage.

Liability insurance covers damage caused during a stay abroad. Accident insurance covers your own injuries, such as those resulting from accidents while commuting.

If you receive PROMOS or Erasmus+ funding, you qualify for an insurance plan provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Travel health advice

Whether you’re planning a trip abroad for a few days or several months, taking the necessary precautions regarding health care is very important! This includes packing a travel health kit - especially if you take medication regularly - as well as getting the right vaccinations.

Especially outside of Europe, certain vaccinations are required depending on your country of destination and you may not even be allowed to enter the country without them! You can find important travel and safety information on the Federal Foreign Office's website.
