Nationwide Funding Opportunities
Nationwide funding opportunities are generally available to students across the entire Federal Republic of Germany. Of particular importance are the Begabtenförderwerke (organisations for the promotion of gifted students), which, within the framework of a programme of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt – BMFTR), provide financial support for students and doctoral candidates. This is mainly achieved through the award of full scholarships. Training and continuing education courses are a common additional offer for scholarship holders, although the programmes differ depending on the scholarship provider. The Begabtenförderwerke may be politically, denominationally, or ideologically independent in their orientation. Information on the 13 Begabtenförderwerke can be found on the Stipendium Plus website.
The management of the Studienförderfonds Siegen e.V. offers guidance on the orientation of the individual funding programmes and can establish contact with current scholarship holders as well as with the trust lecturers (Vertrauensdozenten) of the foundations at the University of Siegen. A brief overview of the 13 Begabtenförderwerke is also available here (in German). Please note the different application deadlines published on the websites of the respective foundations.
In addition to those mentioned above, there are numerous other providers of scholarships, some of which are general in nature, while others are specific to subject areas or stages of study. Several online databases now exist that provide information on such funding opportunities.
