Scholarship Combines Academic Study with Practical Construction Experience

Jim Hufnagel, a student at the University of Siegen, is receiving funding through a nationwide scholarship program in masonry construction. The goal is to strengthen the exchange between academic education and construction practice.

Research Profile

The research of the Chair of Structural Concrete focuses on the following topics:

  • Design and construction with ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC),
  • Shear bearing behaviour of reinforced concrete members,
  • Mechanics of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC),
  • Retrofitting of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures in building and bridge construction,
  • Innovative facade constructions,
  • Serviceability of reinforced concrete structures.

 

The Chair of Structural Concrete is also involved in the Institute for Advanced Materials and Structures (FiBB) at the University of Siegen. There, it is working interdisciplinary within the School of Science and Technology as well as with other research teams and with the local building industry in the field of research, assessment and development of sustainable building materials and structures.

Inclination of cracks and bearing behaviour of prestressed UHPFRC girders subjected to shear

Unlike for reinforced concrete members with shear reinforcement, a generally accepted model, which is able to describe the shear bearing behaviour of specimens without shear reinforcement consistently, does not exist until this day. Comparing different models shows that the relevant shear bearing mechanisms, namely the uncracked concrete compressive zone, the aggregate interlock, and the dowel action of the longitudinal reinforcement, are interpreted and weighted differently.

Rotation capacity of plastic hinges in mixed reinforced UHPC flexural members

The rotation capacity of plastic hinge regions characterises the ductility of reinforced/prestressed concrete beams and enables the redistribution of forces in statically indeterminate structures. Existing models for predicting the rotation capacity of reinforced/prestressed concrete beams can hardly be transferred and applied to UHPC beams, since UHPC beams are generally reinforced with steel fibres.

Services

Know-How and technical equipment make the Chair of Structural Concrete a reliable contact for the building industry, the public building authorities and also for consulting engineers. The range of activities covers the complete structural and civil engineering. The main focus is placed on the integration of innovative high performance materials.

The extensive range of services offers i.a.:

  • Development, calculation and optimisation of constructions made of concrete, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete,
  • Application for fundings and leading realisation of application-oriented research and development projects,
  • Consulting and assistance by expert opinions regarding the application of innovative construction methods and not yet standardised building products and materials, e.g. by an individual approval (ZiE),
  • Design, execution and assessment of tests on construction members, e.g. to achieve a national technical approval (abZ), or an individual approval (ZiE) or in case of structural damages,
  • Design by testing and application of other research related analysis and design methods (i.a. non-linear finite element analysis), e.g. for assessment or retrofitting of existing structures,
  • Consulting for all aspects of design and construction (qualification and technology transfer).

The Chair of Structural Concrete does not only possess qualified personal and modern hard- and software but can also use the technical equipment of the Laboratory of the Institute of Structural Engineering for experimental investigations.
