Dates and deadlines
Completing the sports science preparatory course is a prerequisite for enrolling in the certificate program and participating in face-to-face courses. There is generally no deadline for completing the preparatory course and subsequent enrolment. However, if you would like to take on-campus courses in the sports hall in summer semester 2026, you must have passed the preparatory course and be enrolled on the certificate course before the start of the enrolment phase (see below). We therefore recommend that you have passed the preparatory course by mid-March. You can find the Moodle course here
(Propaedeutic Course Certificate Sport - Education and Training).
Note on enrollment: If you have passed the digital exam of the sports science preparatory course, a database will be activated. You must upload your declaration of fitness for sport there. Next, an e-mail template with a verification link will be activated. You send this email to the relevant contact person in the Student Administration Office to register for the certificate program. The verification link is intended exclusively for the Registrar's Office. If you click on the link, you will be taken directly back to the link page.
Note on course registration: You can only register for courses via unisono once you have completed the sports science preparatory course. You will be booked on unisono in good time before the next booking phase. If you need a quick booking of your performance, please write an e-mail to christopher.meier@uni-siegen.de.

About us
Aims and contents of the sports certificate program
The Central Operating Unit for Sport and Exercise (ZB-SB) at the University of Siegen has a unique structure in Germany. In addition to university sports, students from all disciplines are offered the certificate course in Sport - Education and Training, which can be completed as an additional qualification to the main course of study.
The certificate course in Sport - Education and Training aims to provide participants with the necessary skills to plan, implement and evaluate sports programs (level 6 of the German Qualifications Framework). The courses take place in theory and practice. They focus on the design of sports programs from various fields of movement in the contexts of education and training.
As many students as possible should benefit from this course. It is therefore easily accessible, offers many options and can be easily adapted to the individual course of study of the main degree program and the goals pursued. The Certificate in Sport thus contributes to the profiling of study biographies and promotes lifelong learning as further education. Further information can be found in the FAQ.
Degree
The propaedeutic course in sports science
The certificate program starts with a propaedeutic course in sports science, which consists entirely of digital lessons and can be started at any time. No special registration is required, registration for the Moodle course
is sufficient. The propaedeutic course concludes with a digital exam, the passing of which is a prerequisite for access to all further courses in the certificate program in sport. This exam can be repeated as often as required until it is passed. Participation in the preparatory course and the examination is free of charge.
The compulsory section
The compulsory section includes three courses with theory-practice links that take place in the sports hall.
- The first course focuses on the movement field of play in the context of education,
- the second course focuses on the design of training processes in sport,
- The third course is the final examination (teaching test).
The sports certificate course comprises a total of at least 16 SWS and is divided into:
> a sports science preparatory course (2 SWS),
> a compulsory area (6 SWS) and
> an elective area (at least 8 SWS).
In addition, two external courses must be completed:
> first aid course
> work shadowing
The elective area
At least four elective courses must be taken in order to obtain the certificate. The courses offered in the elective area are based on demand and the current continuing education needs of the students. The elective options allow students to individually accentuate their additional qualification. For example, it is possible for them to cover all content areas from the framework requirements for school sports or to obtain further sports licenses and badges during their studies. Further information on the courses can be found in the handbook and in the course descriptions on unisono
can be found.
Obtaining the trainer C license
The University of Siegen cooperates with the Landessportbund NRW. This cooperation enables students to have the training content of the certificate course recognized by the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and thus obtain the trainer C license (popular sports).
FAQ
The certificate program is aimed at students of all degree programs at the University of Siegen. Access to the face-to-face events in the sports hall is subject to three conditions: (1) successful completion of the sports science preparatory course, (2) a declaration of fitness for sport and (3) student status (note: it is not possible to enrol in the certificate course alone). Guest students, preliminary students (bridges to studies), employees of the university, alumni and students on leave of absence are not admitted to the events in the sports hall. The certificate program always begins with the sports science preparatory course. The prerequisite for participation in the preparatory course is personal access to the Moodle learning platform. Here
to the sports science preparatory course.
There is no sports aptitude test. In the courses with a high practical component, it is primarily the ability to organize sports activities that is tested and not the student's own athletic performance. However, you should enjoy exercise, as the compulsory and elective courses take place in the sports hall in order to directly link theory and practice. Sometimes the lecturers and sometimes fellow students may take on the role of exercise leaders. If you are interested, you can take courses in the elective area to specialize in certain fields of movement and sports. The aim of these courses can be to further develop your own sports motor skills. This includes, for example, the German Lifeguard Badge (DRSA). To take part in the compulsory and optional courses, you must submit a declaration of fitness for sport.
The certificate study program in sports is a certificate program in German. In programs in German, proficiency in German is mandatory: DSH exams level 2 or 3 (German language exam for foreign students wishing to enter a university) or an equivalent diploma is required. You can find further information here.
The certificate program can be started at any time. Entry is always via the sports science preparatory course. It is free of charge and non-binding. The preparatory course is a completely digital event with online lessons that can be started at any time and concludes with a test. Passing this test is a prerequisite for enrolling in the certificate program and attending face-to-face courses in the next enrollment phase. Here
to the sports science preparatory course.
The first step is to register for the sports science preparatory course on the moodle learning platform. Registration is possible here
possible. Once you have passed the digital examination for the sports science preparatory course, a database will be activated. You must upload your declaration of fitness for sport there. In the next step, an e-mail template will be activated. You send this e-mail to the contact personresponsible for you
in the Registrar's Office to register for the certificate program. Please note: The verification link in the e-mail template is only intended for the Registrar's Office. If you click on the link, you will be taken directly back to the link page. There is no application procedure or sports aptitude test.
The propaedeutic course in sports science is free of charge. There are therefore no costs involved in starting the certificate course. The elective and compulsory courses are each subject to a fee of 15.00 euros and must be paid by direct debit mandate. For excursions or special offers, additional costs may be incurred in addition to the fee, for example for entrance fees and travel expenses. The total cost of the certificate course depends on how many events you attend. The minimum cost is 105.00 euros. Information on the payment process will always be sent to you by e-mail at the beginning of each semester. If you also apply for the ÜL-C license, a fee of 25.00 euros must be paid to the Landessportbund NRW.
You can only register for courses once you have been enrolled by the Registrar's Office and have subsequently completed the preparatory course. We will register you in unisono in good time before the next enrollment phase. You can then register for the courses during the enrolment phase of the certificate program via unisono
(Additional offers -> Events of the Central Operating Unit Sport and Exercise -> Certificate Sport - Education and Training). The first-come, first-served principle applies to registration: places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The fee for the course place is also due upon enrolment (see question: What does the certificate course cost?). You can find information on the courses on offer and the enrolment phase under Dates and deadlines.
The Sport - Education and Training certificate documents that competencies have been acquired that enable the planning, implementation and evaluation of sports activities in the contexts of education and training. Sports activities in the context of education are particularly relevant in schools. These include, for example, the provision of substitute teaching in the subject of sport, interdisciplinary teaching with the participation of the subject of sport, sport in the all-day program, the moving school as well as sport-related hiking days and sports festivals. The educational context can also be found in sports clubs, for example in children's sports schools or in adult education as well as, for example, in sports activities in open child and youth work (social work). Sports offers that are in the context of training can be found in sports clubs, as well as in company sports, commercial sports organizations (e.g. fitness studios, ball schools, sports tourism) and in school sports (compensatory sports, talent development, sports competitions). The training context is mainly about (broad) sporting performance and fitness in recreational and health sports. In addition to training sessions, such sporting activities also include sporting competitions and sporting events.
The courses in the certificate program take place in theory and practice. They focus on the design of sports programs from various fields of movement in the contexts of education and training. You can find detailed information on the individual courses in the handbook
and in the course descriptions in unisono.
The certificate program qualifies students for activities in the field of sport, but does not provide a teaching qualification for the subject of sport. It is not an equivalent substitute for a teaching degree in sport. The Certificate in Sport - Education and Training is an additional qualification that is a useful addition to the skills required for a successful career start. For prospective teachers, the certificate opens up opportunities for employment in extracurricular sports and exercise programs at school (for example, in all-day or active schools) and in substitute and interdisciplinary teaching. Whether it is also possible to work as a sports teacher without a teaching qualification is decided by the school management and district governments on the basis of ministerial decrees (see for example here
for NRW). The University of Siegen offers a teacher training program in sports in cooperation with the German Sport University Cologne. If you are interested, you can contact the Central Student Advisory Service.
The certificate program comprises a total of at least eight courses with 2 SWS each as well as proof of the first aid course and the observation of two units in different sports programs. Students usually complete the program in three to four semesters. The courses of the certificate program usually take place as face-to-face events during the lecture period between 08:00 and 18:00.
If you are unable to attend a course on a particular date, please cancel your attendance by emailing the teacher and ask other participants about the content you have missed. Especially if it is the first date of the semester, you must expect that you will be assigned topics and dates for the coursework, for example, and that your preferences cannot be taken into account. Please note that no absences are permitted for compact courses.
To obtain the certificate, you must pass two examinations. The first exam concludes the preparatory course. It is an open-book multiple-choice test that is completely digital (duration approx. 60 minutes). Passing this test is a prerequisite for access to all further courses in the certificate program. The test can be repeated as often as required until it is passed. The second examination is a teaching test, which must be taken in the final course Planning, implementing and evaluating sports activities. The teaching test consists of written planning, practical implementation, peer consultation and oral reflection on a sports activity. A failed teaching test can be repeated twice. In all other courses, in addition to active participation, students must also complete a course assignment. The form and scope of the coursework will be announced at the beginning of each course. Failed coursework can be repeated without restriction.
The basic regulations regarding the non-performance of coursework can be found in §6 of the study regulations. If you are unable to complete an examination, you must inform the responsible teacher immediately and provide a written explanation (e.g. by submitting a medical certificate). If the reason is recognized, the examination will not be counted as a failed attempt. Please note that it is generally not possible to repeat the examination in the same semester.
Only courses that correspond to level 6 of the German Quality Framework can be recognized for the certificate course. This corresponds to the level of a university degree course. Recognition is only possible for the elective area. Irrespective of credits already acquired elsewhere, the courses from the compulsory area and the preparatory course must be completed in full as part of the certificate program. Recognition is generally not possible here, as these courses are not only associated with the identity of the certificate, but also with further recognition for the trainer C license. Qualifications from organized sport and private further education institutions are generally not recognized. Recognition of university (sports) studies is possible. In the case of FH courses, the level must be checked on a case-by-case basis.
You have two different options for completing the work shadowing assessment:
Option 1
The work shadowing takes place in two different sports activities of your choice (e.g. sports lessons, club sports, university sports, gym classes), each lasting at least 45 minutes. The two sports activities must differ significantly from each other either in the type of sport or the sports group observed. You may not regularly lead or participate in the sports program yourself.
Option 1 can be carried out at any time. However, it is recommended that you do not start the work shadowing until you have already attended a few courses in the certificate program. The aim of the work shadowing should be to observe the actions of other trainers outside the protected framework of the certificate course and to reflect on them with reference to theory.
Proof of the work shadowing must be submitted in the form of a work shadowing report during the final course Planning, implementing and evaluating sports activities. You can find a template for the work shadowing report at Forms.
Option 2
In option 2, the work shadowing serves to prepare your teaching sample in the final course Planning, implementing and evaluating sports activities. To do this, you will observe a sports activity related to the topic of your teaching sample, then have a discussion with the teacher and complete a work shadowing report. You will receive further information on this option at the final event.
The work shadowing can be completed at all organizations that offer sports activities (e.g. sports lessons, club sports, university sports, fitness studio courses). These clubs, for example, would be happy to hear from you:
| Organization | Contact person | Contact person |
| Sportfreunde Siegen | Ann-Kathrin Harrer (Head of the office) | ann-kathrin.harrer@sportfreunde-siegen.de |
| JSG Dreis-Tiefenbach-Bürbach | Frederic Lenßen | frederic.lenssen@web.de |
| TSV Weisstal | Tobias Schmidt (youth department) | tobias.schmidt@tsv-weisstal.de |
The first aid course must be carried out in accordance with the 'Common Principles for Basic and Advanced Training in First Aid' of the Federal Working Group on First Aid. Yes, after receiving the certificate you can take further courses as long as you are still enrolled at the University of Siegen. However, it is only possible to take further courses if there are still places available in these courses after the end of the enrolment phase. Remaining places are not allocated via unisono. If you are interested in remaining places, you must send an e-mail with your course preferences to christopher.meier@uni-siegen.de. If there are still places available, you will be admitted after the end of the booking phase. Following the booking of credits, you can independently create a new transcript of records via unisono. However, a new certificate will not be issued.
As many students as possible should benefit from the certificate program. It is therefore easily accessible, offers many options and can be flexibly adapted to the individual course of study of the main study program and the goals pursued. The courses can be taken and paid for on a semester-by-semester basis. There is no time limit for completing the program during your studies. The Central Operating Unit Sport and Exercise would like to offer the certificate program as barrier-free as possible. Should barriers nevertheless arise, we will endeavor to find suitable solutions without delay. Dealing with diversity is addressed in the courses. Diversity is a relevant topic in sport that is not only discussed in abstract terms, but can be experienced directly in the courses. There is no sports aptitude test. Students who wish to take part in the certificate program only have to declare their suitability for sport. There are no examinations in the certificate program that require outstanding sports motor skills. The courses are expressly not primarily intended to improve the student's own sports motor skills, but to acquire the skills required to design sports programs.
The portal of the Federal Institute for Sports Science is suitable for researching sports science literature. The current sports science literature of the University of Siegen can be found in the main library on level 2 of the AR campus.
