Center for Economic Education in Siegen (ZÖBIS)
1. teaching (process) research in economic education
We train teachers for social sciences at general education schools and for economics at vocational colleges. Our ideal of good economics teaching is:
- addressing current social and economic problems and discussions,
- creative and constructive work in the classroom and
- thinking and acting like economists on a small scale, based on the current state of the art in economics.
So far, little is known about how social science and economics teaching takes place in different types of schools. As lesson observations involve a great deal of effort and very high hurdles, our first step is to approach lesson research using process data and lesson inputs.
2. subject science and subject didactics
Subject-specific didactics is part of subject-specific science. Subject-specific didactics cannot be practiced without solid subject-specific training. Subject-specific science cannot do without thinking about how to teach it. For this reason, ZÖBIS does not have professorships purely in subject didactics, but rather professors who are equally active in both subject science and subject didactics and are proficient in the respective state of the art. This distinguishes ZÖBIS from other institutes and professorships for economic education in German-speaking countries.
3. a different kind of teaching is possible
We do three fundamental things differently in the training of student teachers and in teacher training courses at ZÖBIS:
- Alignment of courses with the requirements of the relevant core curricula.
- Orientation towards the Plural Economics degree program, so that the disciplinary diversity later enables students to teach controversially within the subject.
- University education that implements a double interweaving of theory and practice: interweaving of current scientific research and teaching practice as well as interweaving of didactic theory and teaching practice. For this reason, ZÖBIS is staffed by qualified subject specialists, subject didacticians and former or current teachers.
