Introducing the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Business Information Systems, with a Special Focus on IT for an Aging Society

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Claudia Müller, we conduct research and teach at the intersection of demographic and digital transformation. Our goal is to sustainably promote social participation, independence, and quality of life for older and vulnerable people. At the heart of our work is the Siegen “Praxlabs” approach: In close, participatory collaboration with the target groups, we design practical, socio-technical solutions in the field of “Health & Aging.” In doing so, we explore not only technological development but also how people learn to use new technologies in their individual living environments and integrate them into their daily lives.

Our Research Profile

Description of the research focus areas and list of focus areas

The research conducted by the chair operates at the intersection of demographic and digital transformation and adopts a socio-technical perspective on information systems in the field of “Health & Aging.” Digital technologies are not viewed in isolation but are always examined and designed within the context of everyday life, living environments, and care settings. A central focus is on how digital solutions can help maintain social participation, mobility, and independence among older and vulnerable people, as well as sustainably improve their quality of life.

Methodologically, our research relies heavily on the Siegen “real-world lab” approach (“Praxlabs”). We combine research on technology adoption in real-world settings with participatory design (co-creation) and the prototypical development of new IT artifacts. By actively involving all relevant stakeholders—from older adults and caregivers to family members—in the entire design process, we ensure that the technologies are tailored to their needs and widely accepted. The goal is both to contribute to the scientific understanding of technology adoption and to provide concrete ideas and innovations for home care and healthcare in an aging society.

Research Focus Areas

  • Socio-technical System Design in the Field of Health & Aging
  • Participatory Technology Development (Co-Creation) in Healthcare
  • Real-world labs (Praxlabs), appropriation research, and experiential learning
  • Assistive Technologies and Telemedicine in Long-Term Care
  • Digital Participation, IT Accessibility, and Inclusion
  • eHealth and Digital Media in Caring Communities
  • Digitization of Social Infrastructure and Services
