Shape Your Own Future, Starting in Siegen
How do we build for a changing world? Whether addressing climate protection, affordable housing, or sustainable transportation, civil engineers design the infrastructure that will shape our future. Siegen's bachelor's program in civil engineering equips you with the skills to plan and build in a responsible and innovative way. You will learn
The part-time course is structured like a conventional bachelor's degree. However, you can flexibly extend your studies from the regular six semesters up to twelve semesters to fit your personal situation. You decide for yourself how many modules you take per semester — depending on how much time you can devote to your studies. Along the way, you acquire in-depth academic knowledge while remaining flexible at the same time: many students work during their studies, typically as a student employee at a company in their field — to finance their studies and gain practical experience. Others use the additional time for family commitments such as childcare or caring for elderly or disabled family, for voluntary work, or to better reconcile their studies with health or personal challenges.
If you are studying part-time, it is advisable to have an employment contract for the duration of your studies — this creates planning security. You can apply what you have learned directly, especially in your specialist work, which makes it much easier to understand the content. Many employers offer flexible working hours or support with the course of study to ensure a good work-life balance. This combination offers you strong chances of making your position at the firm permanent and ultimately excellent career prospects afterwards.
You will learn
- engineering fundamentals - e.g. mathematics, mechanics and surveying,
- classic disciplines such as statics, transportation, construction operations, and hydraulic engineering,
- as well as current future topics such as sustainable building materials, flood protection, and new mobility and traffic concepts.
This program blends theoretical learning with hands-on experience through lab internships, field trips, and applied projects. Interested in combining your studies with vocational training? The dual study program offers that opportunity.
Career Prospects
As a civil engineer, you are in demand for designing and constructing energy-efficient buildings, as well as ensuring safe infrastructure that withstands the impacts of climate change. Graduates enjoy a broad range of career opportunities in engineering and planning firms, construction companies, public administration, water management, and transportation planning.
You can pursue a master’s degree that matches your interests and career goals, with options to complete the Master of Science after your bachelor’s or even part-time. Some programs also let you begin graduate modules during your final year, streamlining your path to both degrees

Bachelor's thesis
An internship of 12 weeks in total must be completed by the beginning of the 4th semester. At least 6 weeks of this must be completed on a construction site; work in an engineering office is also accepted for the remaining time. It is recommended that the internship be completed before the start of the program.
The course is also offered as a dual study program (study + training + practical work in a company). Successful completion leads to two different degrees: the Bachelor of Science and an IHK vocational qualification.
The course is also offered full-time.
