Prof. Dr. Michael Gerke

The Chair of Control and Guidance Technology develops autonomous driving and flying robots. This involves combining modern sensor technology, hardware, software, and control and guidance technology. One area of focus is autonomous driving, with research centered on path planning, mapping, and obstacle avoidance.

Prof. Dr. Frank Gronwald

In the "Reliability of Technical Systems & Electrical Measurement Technology" research group, we provide students with essential knowledge of electrical measurement technology and process measurement technology through lectures and lab sessions. We are also actively involved in other courses focused on the fundamentals of electrical engineering. In our research, we focus on the interdisciplinary fields of “Reliability of Technical Systems” and “Electromagnetic Compatibility,” on which we also offer lectures and collaborate with partners in industry and other institutions. Here in Siegen, we have a dedicated laboratory for electromagnetic compatibility testing, as well as simulation software for calculating and analyzing high-frequency electromagnetic fields.”

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oliver Wallscheid

The Interconnected Automation Systems (IAS) Chair conducts research and teaches in the field of distributed systems, with a focus on power electronics, drive technology, and mechatronics. This encompasses both hardware and software aspects related to the modeling, design, integration, and control of such systems at the intersection of engineering and data science methods. In addition to fundamental academic research, the transfer of knowledge to experimental studies and industrial applications is of particular importance.  

Dr. Steffen Jaschke

The research group is responsible for the teacher education programs (HRSGe/GymGe/BK) that include computer science as a subject. Research and teaching focus on the didactic design of computer science education processes in schools and higher education institutions, combining content-related, methodological, and media-related perspectives with practice-oriented testing. Current projects include digital and AI-supported learning environments, AR/VR-supported teaching and learning settings, and feedback systems.

Prof. Dr. Ralf Dreher

The “Technology Education” department at the vocational college was established as an endowed chair funded by the Siegerland industrial community to address the significant shortage of instructors for industrial and technical vocational training in the region. The chair has implemented a nationwide curriculum for the occupational fields of metal technology, electrical engineering, and technical computer science, which centers on acquiring independent and sustainable knowledge of work processes through instructional development projects in the technology education laboratories, and using this as a foundation to develop instructional units (learning situations).

Similarly, in close collaboration with regional industry in particular, research is conducted on the structures and content of work processes in a work reality characterized by the transformation of industrial work—marked by the use of Industry 4.0, AI, and additive manufacturing technologies. Research in this context encompasses the documentation and description of prototypical work processes, the development of necessary measures for teacher professional development, and forms of internal differentiation within vocational education for traditionally very heterogeneous groups of teachers, in cooperation with social organizations and the Employment Agency.

Prof. Dr. Roland Wismüller

The department focuses on low-level programming, distributed systems, and electronic exercise and examination systems. Specifically, we are currently developing a virtual machine for secure collaboration in component-based systems, a system for easily visualizing algorithms, and learning and tutoring systems for programming education. A particular focus is on automated feedback generation using large language models (LLMs).

Prof. Dr. Roman Obermaisser

The Chair of Embedded Systems focuses on real-time performance, reliability, safety, and adaptivity in distributed embedded systems and at the chip level. In addition to basic research in the areas of system architectures, design methods, and fault tolerance, this also includes applications in medical technology, the automotive industry, avionics, energy systems, and industrial automation. For example, the chair develops scheduling algorithms for the temporal and spatial planning of safety-critical applications, including their computations and communication across the cloud-edge continuum. The components and services developed include software, hardware, and tools, which are experimentally evaluated in simulations and physical systems. A key focus is on techniques for embedded artificial intelligence with reliable AI accelerators for safety-critical applications.

Prof. Dr. Malte Lochau

The Model-Based Engineering (MBE) Group conducts research and teaches in the fields of software engineering and database systems, with a particular focus on techniques and tools for the holistic use of formal models in the software development process. Key areas of focus include configurable software and variant management, ensuring software quality through software testing, and quantum software engineering.

Prof. Dr. Kristof Van Laerhoven

Our research focuses on a new generation of small, embedded computer systems equipped with basic processing and sensor modules, enabling them to detect, monitor, and respond to phenomena in their environment and learn from them. We are particularly interested in obtaining multiple simple (and therefore more difficult to use) sensor signals in low-power devices, rather than solutions that focus on a few high-quality signals, which are typically more expensive, more complex, and/or more vulnerable.

Prof. Dr. Markus Lohrey

The Theoretical Computer Science Research Group addresses algorithmic and complexity-theoretic problems in automata theory, algebra (particularly group theory), and database theory. A key focus is on algorithms that operate directly on compressed data without first decompressing it. In particular, we investigate grammar-based compression methods that hierarchically decompose complex objects, identify recurring patterns, and replace them with macros. We are also interested in algorithms that operate on data streams (streaming algorithms).

The Medical Informatics and Graph-Based Systems Research Group at the University of Siegen (MIGS) brings together expertise in the fields of knowledge management, artificial intelligence, data and text mining, machine learning, semantic technologies and knowledge graphs, and the use of sensor data and smart metering systems. Our research focuses on developing new approaches to knowledge modeling using knowledge graphs and applying them to hybrid, explainable recommendation systems that explore knowledge structures and make knowledge usable across systems. In doing so, we support the fields of medicine, education, and industrial manufacturing and maintenance.

Prof. Dr. Bhaskar Choubey

The department focuses on the development and research of analog and integrated circuits, particularly for image processing systems, CMOS image sensors, and microelectromechanical systems. Current research also focuses on the hardware implementation of artificial intelligence—for example, using memristors—with applications in the financial and business sectors.

Prof. Dr. Ivo Ihrke

The Chair of Computational Sensing / Communications Engineering focuses on the research field of “computational imaging”—the development and implementation of imaging systems in which algorithmic processing plays a central role.

The focus is on a holistic approach: from experimental planning and modeling through numerical methods to practical implementation, data acquisition, algorithm development, and evaluation. By considering the entire imaging chain, the goal is to fully exploit the optimization potential of such systems.

The focus of teaching and research is on the development and analysis of photonic and quantum electronic devices for ultra-high-frequency applications, particularly in security-related and information technology systems, as well as in bioscientific applications.

Prof. Dr. Elmar Griese & Dr. Thomas Kühler

The Chair of Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Photonics conducts research on short-range optical connections for electrical environments. The focus is on the design and development of processing techniques for optical waveguides in thin glass via diffusion—that is, ion-exchange technologies—for integration into electrical printed circuit boards. In particular, the research focuses on optical directional couplers for bidirectional connections. Optical waveguides provide significantly higher data rates than can be achieved with electrical connections. The department also serves as a point of contact for solving electrodynamic field problems using tailored numerical methods for practical applications. In teaching, the areas of “Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering,” “Fundamentals of Signal and System Theory,” “Numerical Methods,” “Electromagnetic Field Theory,” and “Optical and Electrical Signal Transmission” are covered in both German and English.

The Chair of Communications Engineering develops sustainable and energy-efficient wireless communication and sensor systems. The focus is on resource-efficient technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT) and industrial digitalization.
Key research areas include backscatter communication, near-field communication (NFC), wireless power transmission, and RF energy harvesting.

The Chair of Computer Graphics and Multimedia Systems deals with all aspects of image synthesis, ranging from the creation of 3D models of complex objects and scenes (modeling), the creation of geometric objects from real-world scenarios or abstract data sets (visualization), the simulation of visual natural phenomena and physically based lighting calculations, all the way to efficient image generation methods (rendering).

The Computer Vision group conducts research in the fields of mathematical image processing, computer vision, and machine learning, with a particular focus on the combination of machine learning and energy minimization methods. In this context, we are interested in efficient optimization techniques, convex relaxations, inverse problems, and provable properties of deep neural networks in the aforementioned areas.

The Intelligent Systems Group (ISG) conducts research in the areas of recommendation systems (RecSys), personalization, and information retrieval (IR), as well as in automated machine learning (AutoML), meta-learning, and algorithm selection. Areas of particular interest to us include smart places, eHealth, manufacturing (Industry 4.0), mobility, visual computing, and digital libraries.

The Chair of Media Informatics focuses on various aspects of machine and human vision, including image segmentation, face recognition, and the three-dimensional reconstruction of faces from individual images. A key focus of current research is on biologically inspired models and architectures.

Assistant Professor Dr. Jovita Lukasik

The Visual Computing Group focuses on computer vision and machine learning. One area of emphasis is the automatic development of neural networks. Our goal is to discover how such networks can become more efficient while remaining robust against image artifacts. We are also exploring new approaches to better understand how neural networks make decisions—and how these decisions can be brought closer to human decision-making.
