What makes for good college teaching, and how do students learn successfully? In this introductory workshop, you’ll reflect on your role as an instructor, explore learning motivation and the shift in perspective toward students, and learn about the concept of constructive alignment. Together, you’ll develop concrete approaches for competency-based and motivating instruction.

How can you provide effective, goal-oriented advising to students? In this introductory workshop, you’ll reflect on your role in counseling situations and learn how to systematically structure counseling processes. Using practical methods such as preparatory questions and SMART action goals, you’ll develop strategies for constructive and beneficial collaboration with students.

How can exams be designed to be competency-based and fair? In this introductory workshop, you’ll explore the role of exams, constructive alignment, and the formulation of learning outcomes. You’ll learn about various types of exams and quality criteria, and reflect on how reference standards and assessment errors can influence grading.

One of the goals of effective teaching is to engage students in order to initiate thinking and learning processes. In this context, instructors play the role of facilitators, among other things, to encourage student engagement, structure contributions in terms of content, and ensure that results are captured. In this workshop, elements of facilitation will be introduced and applied to participants’ own teaching. The focus will be on initiating instructional discussions and facilitating discussions during various phases of a course.

Content:

In this one-day face-to-face workshop, we will identify the challenges that participants face when preparing and
conducting feedback meetings and work out how we want to deal with the
challenges. After input on basic aspects, we will then carry out
simulations in which feedback discussions are practiced. Participants give and
receive feedback on the simulations to optimize their feedback practice. We address the benefits and
relevance, as well as the objectives, functions, principles, criteria and formulations that are central to the use of
feedback. An online padlet with
links to numerous resources and the workshop documentation is also available for further work after the workshop.

How can feedback enhance student learning and improve your own teaching? In this introductory workshop, you’ll learn about various aspects and methods of feedback and try them out right away. Together, we’ll develop ideas for an open, respectful, and reciprocal feedback culture that involves both instructors and students.
