International Students
Programs of Study and Certificates in the Department of Music
The University of Siegen offers several programs leading to certification for the teaching profession, such as for elementary schools or various types of high schools. These programs can be completed with a bachelor’s degree (Bachelor of Arts: 6 semesters of study) or a subsequent master’s degree (Master of Education: 4 semesters). The core areas of training and education are active music practice and performance (such as instrumental and vocal lessons, conducting, composition, and music theory), musicology, and music education. In addition to individual or group lessons in various musical disciplines, lectures, tutorials, seminars, and project work form the core of the program.
Prerequisites for enrollment are the Certificate of General Qualification for University Entrance and an audition. International students may apply for enrollment by submitting a DVD recording in lieu of an audition. Additionally, the Department of Music and Arts offers the opportunity to earn a doctoral degree (Dr. phil.) or to complete a habilitation in music education or musicology.

In addition to fostering and promoting academic knowledge and skills through lectures and seminars, there is a wide range of student activities designed to develop personal skills, get involved, and meet fellow students at the University of Siegen—for example, at a student-run TV station, through simulations of political events such as the UN Conference in New York, by organizing and participating in car races, or as a team member in a student management consulting firm. Siegen is also a hub for the arts, offering plenty of opportunities to engage in cultural activities such as the university choir, orchestra, big band, or theater groups. Anyone who is not only interested but also wishes to get involved in the university’s musical, theater, art, or dance events can choose from a wide range of different activities.
Siegen
Siegen is a modern university town nestled in beautiful countryside. Its charming and natural landscape invites visitors to relax—for example, while hiking along the Rothaarsteig, playing golf, gliding high above the region’s lovely landscapes, or enjoying the nearby winter sports facilities.
A diverse array of museums—ranging from Baroque painting to contemporary art—along with concerts spanning jazz, classical, and pop, as well as theater, comedy, cabaret, and variety shows at the Siegen Apollo Theater, the Siegerland Halle, or the LYZ cultural center, offer excellent opportunities for all kinds of cultural interests and activities. All venues present both in-house productions and guest performances by renowned ensembles, orchestras, bands, and artists.
The region also offers an excellent selection of dining options and restaurants. In cozy cafés, beer gardens, or restaurants, you can find almost anything, from German to international specialties. Nightclubs and student bars further enliven Siegen’s nightlife.

Assistant professors and lecturers teach courses and give lessons in popular music, choral and orchestral conducting, piano, organ, voice, guitar, harp, percussion, woodwinds, and brass, as well as string instruments.
