Introducing the Chair
Our mission is to provide scientifically pioneering support for the development of a sustainable and future-proof healthcare system and to actively help shape it. We conduct research on how innovative forms of care and organizational structures can be developed in an effective, efficient, and equitable manner. To this end, we rely on methodologically innovative evaluation approaches and modern data science methods. In close collaboration with regional and international partners from academia and practice, we generate evidence-based insights that bridge the gap between research and practice—to support evidence-based decision-making and a sustainable transformation of the healthcare system.
The Chair of Health Services Research is part of School III for Economics, Business Information Systems, and Business Law(School of Economic Disciplines).
Research Areas and Projects
Our research is dedicated to the interdisciplinary design of a sustainable and future-proof healthcare system. We draw on a broad range of methods: Depending on the research objective, we use quantitative analyses of large, publicly available datasets, qualitative methods, mixed-methods approaches, and innovative techniques from data science and machine learning. In this way, we always select the methods that provide the best possible evidence-based insights for both science and practice.
In our research projects, we collaborate closely with regional and international partners from academia and the professional field. Our goal is not only to publish our findings in renowned academic journals but also to present them in a practical format to best support decision-making in the healthcare system.
Our research activities cover the following fields:
1. Health Economic Evaluation
In this research field, we analyze and evaluate new (digital) intersectoral forms of care. This includes transformation processes in the hospital sector, the integration of medical and social care, and the introduction of digital solutions in outpatient and inpatient care. A key focus of our research activities is the further development of innovative methods to evaluate complex forms of care and precisely analyze heterogeneous treatment effects.

2. Health Management and Organizational Innovations
In this research area, we investigate how hospitals and other healthcare facilities can be organized in an efficient, sustainable, and future-proof manner. The focus is on topics such as sustainable human resources management strategies in hospitals, economic, environmental, and social sustainability in healthcare, digital transformation processes, and the analysis of the determinants and impacts of strategic management decisions.

As an external doctoral candidate at the Chair of Health Services Research at the University of Siegen, Nico Perwolfinger conducts research at the intersection of health care and sustainability. His cumulative dissertation focuses on sustainability reporting in the hospital sector.
