Click here to open the LaTeX demo template in Overleaf.

We recommend Overleaf for writing seminar papers and theses using LaTeX. Overleaf is a browser-based LaTeX editor that can be used for free without installing any additional software.

To help you get started easily, we provide a LaTeX demo template on Overleaf that is based on our Guidelines for Writing Academic Papers. The template includes, among other things, a title page, examples of citations, figures, tables, and equations, as well as a declaration of independence. You can switch between the German (main_DEU.tex) and English (main_EN.tex) templates using the menu on the left.

Open the template using the link below, then create your own copy by selecting Menu → Copy Project. You can edit this copy freely without altering the original template.

Software

Students at the University of Siegen have access to Microsoft 365. Information about the service and how to set it up can be found on the ZIMT website.

As an alternative to traditional word processing programs, we recommend the free typesetting system LaTeX for academic papers. Overleaf is a browser-based LaTeX editor that requires no local installation and makes it easy to get started thanks to its intuitive user interface. TeXstudio is another popular LaTeX editor available for free. To get started easily with these programs, feel free to use the templates provided above.

Bibliography Management

We recommend using a reference management program. Through the University Library’s campus license, students at the University of Siegen can use the full version of Citavi free of charge. Another free alternative is Zotero.

With reference management software, you can import bibliographic entries directly from library catalogs, databases, and websites, organize them, and automatically compile them into a uniformly formatted bibliography. Citing in Word and LaTeX is also supported. This saves time and reduces formatting errors. The University Library also offers regular courses on how to use Citavi and Zotero.
