The Department of Chemistry and Biology introduces itself

The department currently has 17 professorships in areas including classical chemistry and biology. In addition, Siegen is known for innovative research and teaching in analytical, macromolecular and construction chemistry, as well as biochemistry, biotechnology and bioinformatics.

The department offers two Bachelor's degree courses in Chemistry and Digital Biomedical and Health Science and international Master's degree courses in Chemistry, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Biomedical Technology, as well as teacher training courses in Biology and Chemistry. The range of courses is rounded off by the possibility of a doctorate, usually with the degree of Dr. rer. nat.

The department is represented in the INCYTE research center, both in the Micro- and Nanoanalytics Facility (MNaF) and with the specially equipped S2 laboratory area.

Dangerous bleeding: New 3D intestinal model to make causes visible

A research team at the University of Siegen led by biochemist Prof. Dr. Maria Brehm is developing a new type of intestinal model on a microchip. It should help to understand why people with a certain blood clotting disorder suffer from intestinal bleeding that is difficult to treat. Prof. Brehm has now received an award for her project.

Improving the healing of chronic wounds

Researchers at the University of Siegen are involved in a European joint project for the treatment of chronic wounds. The aim is to develop a new type of 4D hydrogel that kills bacteria in wounds and supports the healing process at the same time.
